How it works
- Tax year 2026, computed with the official calculator of the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV), data from 2026-10-25. It is the same data as in the marriage tax tool.
- Federal, cantonal and communal income tax, plus church tax if selected. Every municipality uses its own communal and church tax rates.
- Income from employment only, 35 years old, no children and no wealth, with the standard deductions. For a married couple, both partners are employed.
- The canton view colors each canton by its capital. Inside a canton, other municipalities can be cheaper or more expensive than the capital.
- Colors compare your yearly tax with where you live now. The steps are 2.5%, 10%, 20% and 35% of your current tax, rounded.
- Moving changes more than taxes: rents, home prices, health insurance premiums and travel to work differ too.
- Map: generalized municipal boundaries 2026 of the Federal Statistical Office (BFS, GEOSTAT).
Questions and answers
Where in Switzerland do you pay the least income tax?
In the canton of Zug and other parts of central Switzerland. For a single person earning CHF 100’000 in 2026, the five cheapest municipalities are Baar (ZG), Walchwil (ZG), Zug (ZG), Hünenberg (ZG), Steinhausen (ZG). The most expensive is Les Verrières (NE), with about CHF 19’300 instead of CHF 5’200.
Why is income tax different in every municipality?
The federal tax is the same everywhere. Each canton has its own tariff, and each municipality sets its own tax rate (multiplier) on top of the cantonal tax. Church tax is added if you belong to a recognised church.
Does moving to a low-tax municipality pay off?
Often less than it seems: rents and house prices are usually higher where taxes are low. Compare the tax you save with the extra cost of housing. You pay the tax of the place where you live on 31 December.
