Which health insurance and deductible?
Everyone living in Switzerland must have basic health insurance. It covers the same treatments with every insurer, only the price differs. Choose where you live and how much you usually spend on health: the tool shows the cheapest offers and the deductible that costs you the least.
Yearly cost by deductible
Premiums for a year plus what you pay yourself, for any amount of health costs. Each line is the cheapest offer with that deductible. The solid vertical line marks your costs.

How it works
- Premiums 2027 of all insurers, approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), published at the end of September. Basic insurance covers the same treatments with every insurer.
- You pay the deductible first, then 10% of the remaining costs, at most CHF 700 a year (CHF 350 for children). In hospital you also pay CHF 15 a day, which is not included here.
- A higher deductible lowers the premium. It pays off when your health costs stay low. You can change the deductible every year from 1 January.
- To change insurer for next year, your notice must arrive by 30 November. Insurers must accept you for basic insurance, whatever your age or health.
- New in Switzerland? You must take out basic insurance within 3 months of arrival. It then covers you back to the day you arrived.
- For children the tool shows the price of one child. Many insurers give a discount from the second or third child. Supplementary insurance (dental care, private hospital room) is extra.
Questions and answers
Which health insurance deductible is the cheapest?
It depends on your yearly health costs. The highest deductible, CHF 2’500, saves at most CHF 1’540 a year in premiums compared with CHF 300. That pays off if your costs stay below about CHF 2’000 a year. With higher or regular costs, the CHF 300 deductible usually costs less.
When can I change health insurer?
Your notice must reach the insurer by 30 November, and you change on 1 January. Your insurer tells you the new premium by the end of October. With the CHF 300 deductible and the standard model, you can also change on 30 June with notice by 31 March.
How soon must I get health insurance after moving to Switzerland?
Within 3 months of your arrival. The insurance then covers you from the day you arrived. If you are late, you pay a surcharge on the premium.
